The setting is in New York city, and it's in the 1950s. It's during a six months peroid of the main character's life.
Sylvia Plath says in the beginning of the novel that it is set during the time when The Rosenbergs were executed in NY, witch was in 1953.
The book jumps a lot back and forth in time, so it's hard to know where they're at, at every time.

After she ended her internship in New York, she goes back to her hometown in Boston, where she also attempt to commit suicide. She spends a lot of time in a psychiatric institution, also outside of Boston.
